لم تتبن المؤسسة الأكاديمية في العراق الدراساتِ التي تناولت تمثلات المرأة اجتماعيا وإعلاميا من منظور نسوي إلا بعد عام 2000، وذلك لعزلة المؤسسة، وعدم الجرأة العلمية «البحثية» في دراسة موضوعات لم تسبق دراستها، فضلاً عن خلو الساحة من منظمات نسوية أو حراك نسوي تجاه قضايا تهم النساء، سيما وانّ قضاياهن تحفز بحوثاً من هذا النوع، إلا أن دخول مفاهيم حقوق الإنسان والنوع الاجتماعي وسيداو مع منظمات المجتمع المدني التي ظهرت بعد الاجتياح الأمريكي للعراق عام 2003، لم يحدث فرقاً كبيراً على مستوى الدرس الأكاديمي وإن كانت الموضوعات صارت تطرح في فضاء الحراك النسوي، ومنظمات المجتمع المدني. يحاول البحث معرفة إنْ كان ثمة تحولات في الصورة المنتجة عن المرأة في الأفلام العراقية بعد 2003، أي بعد انتقال الدولة من نظام شمولي يحتكر صناعة الرموز وتداولها إلى نظام تعددي ينبغي أن يعكس تعددية على المستويات الثقافية كافة ويسهم في صناعة ثقافة تشاركية تعمق من قيم المواطنة وحقوق الإنسان.
